Tomato Chatpati

This is a popular Jain dish that is serve with some masala tea.

Ingredients

  • 4 plum tomatoes chopped
  • 4 cups mamra (puffed rice) gently rinsed
  • 1 tbsp urad dal
  • 1 tbsp green chilies
  • 1 tsp turmeric ground
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp asafetida (hing)
  • 1/4 cup oil canola

Instructions

  • Gently rinse mamra and set aside. Be sure not to over water.
  • In a pan on medium low heat, sauté urad dal in oil.
  • Add in chopped tomatoes and green chilies and sauté.
  • Cover pan and let tomatoes cook on low heat for a few minutes.
  • Uncover pan, add in spices, asafetida and salt. Mix well.
  • Use a potato masher to mash the tomatoes and make into gravy.
  • Add in your mamra and mix well until coated with tomato gravy.
  • Turn off heat and serve warm.
